Managing steroid side effects in sarcoidosis: a collaborative approach
If you’re living with sarcoidosis, you may have been prescribed steroids such as prednisone to help control inflammation. While these medications can be highly effective, long-term steroid use can lead to side effects, a concern that Sam and the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR) are working together to address.
FSR is the world's leading international nonprofit organization supporting patients and caregivers living with sarcoidosis and the clinicians and researchers that help them.
FSR has adopted Sam to help patients learn about the side effects of steroids, track their symptoms and empower them to have better conversations with their doctors.
FSR’s website now features information about steroidsandme.com, highlighting its benefits for patients. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to enhancing patient care, improving quality of life, and ensuring that sarcoidosis patients can safely navigate long-term steroid therapy.
“FSR has been a long-time proponent for, whenever medically appropriate, moving patients away from long-term/high-dose steroid use and into less problematic secondary therapies. Despite these efforts, patients continue to be prescribed steroids without considering long-term consequences,” said Tricha Shivas, Chief of Staff and Strategy at FSR.
“By partnering with Sam, FSR hopes to provide patients with the information and tools they need to have conversations with clinicians when discussing alternative therapies and the potential risks of steroid use.”
